What is Hemp and how is it different from marijuana?

Hemp and marijuana both derive from the Cannabis Sativa L. plant family. They are similar in appearance but have distinct differences. Cannabis is full of naturally occurring compounds known as cannabinoids. The distinguishing factor between hemp and marijuana is that hemp contains less than .3% delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the cannabinoid in marijuana known for its intoxicating effects. The most dominant cannabinoid in hemp is Cannabidiol (CBD).

Hemp has many beneficial uses, including those in the manufacturing, agricultural and healthcare industries. It is a reliable alternative to traditional plastics and concrete, as well as fuel and lubricants. From ropes and sails to clothing and paper, the world has been utilizing hemp in everyday life for a long time! Archaeologists have traced early uses of hemp fiber as far back as 8000 BC. The versatility of hemp made it a strategic commodity for millennia. At the dawn of the 20th century, hemp remained one of the most cultivated crops on Earth.

However, in 1937, things changed significantly with the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act, a bill that made large-scale cultivation impossible for American farmers.

What is CBD?

Of the various cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, cannabidoil (CBD) is the most prevalent. Hemp derived CBD promotes and supports healthy bodily function. CBD may help to return the body to a state of equilibrium or homeostasis by interacting with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors regulating various functions of the human body.

What is THC? Is there THC in Heirloom Hemp Co.’s products?

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. All of Heirloom Hemp Co.’s products contain less than 0.3%. These low levels do not produce intoxicating effects.

What is MCT Coconut Oil?

MCT (Medium Chain Triglycerides) oil is a healthy saturated fat that is easy to digest, absorbs quickly and assists in providing lasting energy to the body. We use MCT oil derived from organic coconuts in our Hemp Oil tinctures. MCT Coconut Oil is a great carrier of hemp extract, due to its beneficial properties, thin consistency and lack of flavor. Since cannabinoids are fat soluble, they are quickly released into the body as the MCT oil is absorbed.
